Including Yew Dell Gardens, Louisville Waterfront Gardens, Franklin Park Conservatory, and more!
Day 1
This morning we set off to Louisville, Kentucky. After a surprise stop, followed by a gourmet box lunch, we have a privately guided tour of Kentucky Artisan Distillery, one of the finest stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour ®. We learn about the Farm-to-Bottle process and end with a tasting.
Next, we visit Yew Dell Gardens, an internationally-recognized center of gardening, plants and education, all offered in a stunning site of significant historical importance. Originally the home, gardens and commercial nursery of the late Theodore Klein and his family, the gardens now offer the public exceptional display gardens, an ambitious schedule of education programs and community events, ongoing garden plant research, hiking trails and event rental opportunities. Yew Dell is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Preservation Partner Project of the Garden Conservancy, a national non-profit dedicated to saving the nation’s most exceptional gardens. After a private after-hours tour, we top off the day with a catered dinner overlooking the meadow. This evening we check into The Summit Hotel, Cincinnati, our hotel for the next two nights.
Day 2
After breakfast at the hotel, we see the Ohio Herb Center, the perfect place to experience the world of herbs – gardening, culinary, aromatic, health and wellness. The Nafzger-Miller house, is home to the Herb Center. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, with the earliest part of the house dating to 1855. Next is a visit to Columbus North Market, for lunch on your own. Inside is an eclectic mix of more than 30 independently owned small businesses offering a wide variety of fresh produce, meat, poultry, seafood, flowers, specialty food items, international prepared foods & distinctive gifts.
This afternoon, we have a tour of Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, featuring exotic plant collections and displays, seasonal exhibitions, outdoor gardens, including community and culinary gardens. The Conservatory displays permanent installations of breathtaking Chihuly glass artwork from its collection, the largest private collection in a botanical garden. The colorful glass artwork is placed throughout the Conservatory’s biomes and plant collections. The dynamic scenes highlight the connection between art and nature.
Before dinner, a local guide will board the motorcoach and lead us on a German Village and Garden Tour. Each garden has its own story to tell. The gardens are carefully curated by their owners and offer a variety of aesthetics. While they are certainly all unique, there is a common thread of creativity, care, and dedication throughout. We return for dinner in Cincinnati (B, D)
Day 3
This morning, we visit the Hive and Barrel Meadery in Oldham Gardens in Crestwood where you can choose to enjoy freshly made, award-winning meads and ciders. After lunch at 3rd Turn Oldham Gardens, a once thriving garden center, we have a brief stop at the Louisville Waterfront Botanical Gardens. After disastrous flooding in the late 1800s and again in 1937, the area was turned into a city dump for building refuse from flood-damaged homes. After decades spent as the Ohio Street Dump, the area is being redeveloped into an ecological haven. We make a return visit to Yew Dell Gardens for flower shopping before we head home this afternoon.
